Oakville East – Harvest Notes 2016

We have been blessed once again with a very good growing season for the grapes in Napa and Sonoma. The early bud break and warm conditions during bloom allowed more generous yields than in 2015. We harvested in average about 20% more crop over last year but stayed still shied of being a average crop year.

The mild summer up to late September was ideal for getting perfect clusters/berries at harvest and those mild conditions helped us not to rush any picking decisions for all the early vineyards including Chardonnay, Pinot and Cabernets. The heat waves of late September increased the sugar level for the later vineyards without compromising the overall quality.

The whites came with very balanced chemistry and the fermentations were successful creating very clean and focus flavors. For the reds, the early phenolics analysis revealed low level of tannins allowing our Atelier team to be more aggressive with extraction by warmer and longer macerations. The surprise of the vintage was late unexpected sugar release during fermentation pushing Alcohol levels higher than expected.

The first wines tasted, are fresh and very aromatics for the whites, the Pinots have deep colors and are very varietal focus and the Bordeaux varietals show lots of color as well, dark aromas and refined tannins. Overall, I am very excited to follow the aging and the development of those wines.

Oakville East - Core Stone 2016
Red Wine

tasting notes

This "Right Bank" styled blend of Cabernet Franc (68%), Cabernet Sauvignon (29%), Merlot (2%) and Petit Verdot (1%) from our Oakville East Vineyards brings forward aromas of blueberry, blackberry, tobacco, vanilla, marshmallow, black currant, tea, roses, violets, dust and a hint of mint. The mid palate is full bodied with fine velvet chewy tannins with bright balanced acidity, with flavors of rhubarb, cocoa, strawberry, cassis, and plum. (The last two vintages received 95 points from the famous European wine writer, James Suckling.)

Oakville East - Franc ‘n Stern 2016
Cabernet Franc

tasting notes

Franc ‘n Stern exhibits a dark ruby-purple color with aromas of sweet boysenberry, mulberry and dark fruits along with notes of forest floor and violets. The wine is monstrously full bodied with ripe dark fruit, red plums, freshness, ripe tannins, and length. It should evolve nicely with some age.

Harter Family - Double H Ranch 2015
Cabernet Sauvignon

tasting notes

The Cabernet Sauvignon brought forward from the Harter Vineyards, that were planted in the early 1990’s, is supple, pure, dynamic and polished. The wine exhibits a crushed rock / iron profile which adds dust and minerality to the intense orange blossom, cardamom, blueberry, blackberry, cranberry, red currant and strawberry flavors and aromas. The tannin structure is well-developed and balances with a bright acidity offset by the “ball of blackness flavors” that are typical of young Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine is a classic, and will last for many years, but, because, of the legendary Oakville East Exposure, soft elegant tannin structure that is prevalent in the Harter Family, Double H Ranch wine, the temptation will be to enjoy whenever the occasion warrants.

technical information

Blend: 95% Cabernet Sauvignon,
2.5% Cabernet Franc,
2.5% Petit Verdot
Alc: 14.8%
